Pretty mellow day today at the office. One of my favorite projects of late has been 24″ bikes and parts. It all started 18 or so years ago with a 24″ bike by a company named Patterson. I loved that bike and I would do anything short of paying the several thousand dollars it would take to build and have one again. I really liked to ride that big bike. It was so stable in the air and it was so fast.
Fast forward to a little over a year ago and I was hooked up with a Subrosa Cruiser. In pretty much no time flat it was my everyday bike and I had broken or bent every part on the bike that I didn’t initially swap out. The reason for the parts I kept was we didn’t make an after market replacement for it. Wheels, forks, tires, bars with proper geometry. That is where the bike you see was born.
I talked about how it would be amazing to take and apply our technology to a 24″ bike and also address geometry issues that I was having. As much fun as the other big bikes I rode were, it always felt like I was riding a Segway. JC was in town and was into the idea, so we set off. Some meetings, designs and time later (Interbike 2008) we received sample Frames, Forks and Bars from Sunday and Rims from Odyssey. The frame, fork and bars used our Trademark 41 Thermal Process, making them really strong and light compared to anything at the time. It was also hard to really compare these to anything since most 24″ bikes live up to the name Cruiser. Ours was more of a Bruiser. The really aggressive geometry I experimented with felt amazing first go. I remember after my first run I popped out on the deck and laughed so giddy and the sensation of gong fast and jumping the bike. It was perfect! Exactly like I imagined.
So whats this have to do with the picture? Well one of the final projects we didn’t decide to commit to until after Interbike were the tires. The thing is, tires, good ones at least, just don’t exist for 24″ bikes. Yes, don’t get me wrong, there are some tires out there, but they just aren’t as rad. So we decided if we were going to help Sunday! do the frame, fork and bars. If we were going to make rims, it only made sense to do tires as well. So we did, and afters several months, the tire samples finally showed up and they are perfect! 2.10 Path and a 2.25 Aitken Street tires are the two sizes and styles we will be offering.
So that is where for me the project has come full circle. Everything has been amazing and the tires are great the short bit I cruised around on them today. Tonight was also Greyboy and the War Church. Super good show. They get better and better everytime I see them and the crew gets bigger and bigger. Fun times.
