First off, it’s worth mentioning that Kink’s 3rd offering is drastically more solid than their previous 2 releases, which feels weird to even write because KC withstanding, there are no similarities between the team in Safety First and the team in their first 2 videos. For many years now, people have wondered what was going on with Kink. After a pair of unpopular videos and huge team cuts a few years back the brand seemed to flounder. Over the last year or so however there have been big changes with heavy-weights like Sean Sexton and Chris Doyle being added to the team. So understandably, there is a lot of pressure on Kink to put out a video that represents their brand properly.

The Good: Tony Hamlin’s section is solid and actually makes a White Chapel song work. Albert Mercado’s part has a lot of creative tricks and hard to comprehend switch lines. Darryl Tocco turns in what I consider his best part ever… he is still up to the same barspin/180/barspin-180 trickery but he keeps pushing that shit further and further and it’s awesome to see. Aaron Smith is probably an unknown to most of you and his part is pretty much just straight up amazing. Personally I’d say Chris Doyle’s part might be his personal best too, Darryl did an incredible job combining his unreal jumping variations and his absurdly huge street bangers. Overall the editing is to the point, the music is mostly well thought out and the filming is solid and never distracting.

The Bad: While Sean Sexton is probably one of the most purely talented riders in BMX today, his section never really gets as crazy as you know he is capable of. Tony Hamlin’s part has a cliche 45 second “yell at yourself/crash/throw your bike” intro that makes you wonder “who thought this was a good idea?”. KC Badger’s part is about as interesting as every other KC Badger part ever, except that if you’ve seen any of his other video parts you already know every trick he does in this one. Lil Jon and Landon Anderson share a section that could have been a a good 2 minute part but is instead a mostly boring 3 and a half minute part with a few stand out moments. Oh and there’s a tacked on flow section that could have been left out too.

The End Result: The end result is that while Safety First isn’t perfect, it certainly serves their purpose in defining some sort of image for their brand. If Sexton had a better part and a few of the less interesting sections were replaced with some more interesting pro-team additions, Safety First would probably be a classic. As is, it’s still an enjoyable video and the better parts are good enough to overshadow the filler.
