MATCH OF THE EIGHTIES - 1984-85 SEASON
The fifth from a six-part series, first broadcast by the BBC in 1997, in which Danny Baker takes a retrospective look back at the previous decade’s football.
As top British players, including Liverpool skipper Souness, head for Italy, the English league experiences an influx of foreign talent. A revived Everton make a concerted title challenge, whilst simultaneously defending their FA Cup as far as facing Man United in the final. However, this is a season that will always be overshadowed by tragedies in the stands, as deaths at Valley Parade, St Andrews and Heysel stunned English football, with the latter leading to European exile for our club sides.
