Finally, here is a news post….

Hello from damn near the equator. As many of you know, I have moved to Nicaragua for 2 years to teach High School.
I have been here a week and its already been an overload. I could write for hours and still not get everything that I have been seeing down and do it justice. A few things that have stood out to me are as follows though:

1. Everyone is extremely nice. Though I am “gringo” people have been so polite. Lets hope it stays that way.

2. Everything you ever hear about people being poor MUST be seen IN PERSON! You cannot truly understand and respect the situation that much of the world lives in without seeing it. I have been here one week and I already have such a different perspective on the world than ever before.

3. Driving here is insane! There are NO street signs and the maps are just guesses.

4. I have really only been able to experience much of the school I work for and the campus I live on. I will have much more later about the city as I begin to ride street more.

But for now, check out the pictures of my home:

I live on campus so every morning I walk out the door to this beautiful tropical foliage.

Then, I walk past this gigantic guarded gate. Notice the dead tropical volcanoes covered with trees and the huge lake!

Finally, its hard to forget that the country is not the nicest place at all times as this giant wall outside my backdoor surrounds the whole compound and is patrolled by guards carrying shotguns at all times!

Now I am off to ride street for my first time with some locals! Wish me luck! - Mike
